ExhibitionsShakespeare created a wealth of fantastical characters from fairies and spirits to kings and queens. Since the original performances, each character has been depicted in an array of ways reflecting the different interpretations of the text.
Our online exhibition 'Are ye fantastical?' showcases six of Shakespeare's most enduring characters with a particular focus on the women in his plays. Celebrated children's authors, including Jane Ray and Marcia Williams, have also created their own versions of these iconic women and explain their thinking behind their designs.
